Larger yards
Suburban areas like Cypress, Katy and Bridgeland, and inner-loop pockets like Oak Forest and Garden Oaks, tend to have bigger lots.
Near trails & dog parks
Look for homes near bayou greenways (White Oak, Buffalo Bayou, Brays) or a short walk to a fenced dog park.
Houston heat
Summer pavement gets hot enough to burn paws. Test it with the back of your hand for 5 seconds, carry water and plan outdoor time for early morning or after sunset.
Best walking times
From May through September, aim for before 9 a.m. or after sunset. Watch for heat stress, especially in flat-faced breeds.
Pet-friendly apartments
Ask about breed and weight limits, pet deposits and monthly pet rent, dog runs, and nearby green space.
HOA considerations
Some HOAs limit fence height or materials, how many pets you can have, or leash rules in shared areas. Read the deed restrictions before you buy.
Fencing & backyards
Check for gaps under fences, gate latches and fence height for jumpers. Drainage matters in Houston — a yard that floods becomes a mud pit.
Pools & pet safety
Consider a pool fence, pool alarm or a ramp so a dog that falls in can get out.
Local dog licensing
The City of Houston requires dogs to be registered and vaccinated against rabies. Check BARC for current rules; other cities and the county have their own.

Keep your dog in a quiet room or with a sitter while movers work, update microchip details to your new address, and walk the new neighborhood together early.
